It can be hugely rewarding and inspiring to be managing employees, but it can also be tiring and requires great communication and the ability to develop accountability and trust. It is a manager’s responsibility to try and find the best way to make their team work as a synchronized unit to provide as much value as possible to the company.
These are some tips on how to ensure your tech team remains happy, creative and productive.
Take Advantage of Software
There are many pieces of software that can help manage teams more effectively and with the tech industry, it is something that employees should be able to grasp fairly quickly. There are many pieces of HR software that can assist with this as employee welfare is something that the HR department are chiefly responsible for. Anything that allows for an automated system with strategies and goals that can be easily referred to is likely to ensure that each employee is treated fairly within some guidelines.
Treat them as Equals
One of the most obvious but still neglected methods to managing employees involves treating your team as equals. In many industries, there are egos running high and the tech industry is not immune. Putting these aside and giving peers the appropriate opportunities to voice opinions and concerns is the right course of action. There needs to be a balance between the manager and employees, being able to motivate them and not intimidate them when it comes to important work.
Transparent work environments have been proven to make staff members happier and more creative. The reason behind this is that it develops a feeling of mutual respect and consistent communication, which makes staff feel more secure in their position at the company. They also feel more able to share their opinions on projects or changes, to contribute suggestions and to be more creative. Staff can’t be expected to learn and grow if they’re afraid to be themselves and voice their opinions, so it’s key that managers work with staff to cultivate this culture.
At the core of a cooperative and productive team is open communication where leads can provide constructive feedback and employees can communicate honestly with one another. This doesn’t have to be exclusively for in-house staff either – remote teams can still find ways to communicate regularly, through Slack, Skype or other software tools. Regular meetings and stand up sessions where everyone can share what they’re working on will encourage group conversations and a supportive work environment.
Develop Collaborative Teams
Your team will be happier if they get along with each other, but from a business perspective, they’re also more likely to perform better as a result of this too. A key management strategy is to encourage collaboration between colleagues and make use of the broad range of skills your team will have between them. If there’s a project coming up, for example, don’t just hand it over to one employee and call it a day – see what skills other members of the team have that they can contribute for a better result.
Trust Them to do Their Job
Managers can often make the mistake of being too involved and not letting their team get on with tasks without micromanagement. Delegation is important from a management perspective and understanding when to assign a task and trust that they will perform well is vital. There’s no reason why you can’t stay in the loop and remain up to speed on how the task is progressing, but your team has been hired because of their skills and competencies so it’s important to remember that when assigning roles.
As a manager, preventing team burnout and setting positive boundaries between work and downtime is important for setting the right precedent. Employees should be encouraged to give their all at work, but they should also be reminded that they need to switch off from work when they’re away from the office to prevent burnout and, as a manager, it’s your role to enforce this. For example, this may look like making sure each staff member takes a lunchbreak, doesn’t spend too long at the office after work hours are over or not expecting them to check emails in their leisure time.
