Are there enough good fonts in Indian languages? At least, Satya Rajpurohit from Ahmedabad says no. He established a startup called Indian Type Foundry (ITF) for the purpose and it is changing how fonts are created. The project is especially targeted for big companies like Apple and Google.
Satya founded ITF when he was in boarding school in Rajasthan. He liked drawing letters for the projects of his friends. Later, he found interest in making fonts for number plates and other things. This way he discovered in himself a love for typography and the art of designing letters.
He starting with one font and lately the company has flourished with more than 450 fonts for 20 different writing styles from around the world. Some of his popular fonts to be named here are Kohinoor, Volte and Poppins.
Global corporate giants like Apple, Google and Samsung are using his fonts. In his journey until today, Satya has won several awards for his work in typography.
ITF makes fonts for Indian languages as well as languages for other countries Thai, Russian and Greece. Satya basically believes in preserving cultures through his typography. He stated that making fonts for Indian languages is harder compared to other global languages as these have more characters and shapes. Even though making fonts come with challenges, Satya loves his work and feels like he is dressing up words with various styles.
His most popular font is Kohinoor and it is used by Apple for languages like Hindi and Gujarati. Kohinoor font is even displayed in a museum in London.
Initially, ITF faced challenges finding skilled designers and simultaneously convincing people of the importance of good fonts. However, now more people understand the value of quality fonts for communication and branding.
