AI can now prevent thefts of items in Walmart 1

When an item at a store is checked out without payment due to unintentional issues, or by theft, the process is called “Shrink”. Walmart loses around $4 billion dollars every year due to this, which brought the officials into a soon realization to put a period to this as soon as possible. Hence they looked at technology, and added a little mix to it, taking their company to the next level of safety.

Walmart, in the result of this, is using Artificial Intelligence to prevent scanning mistakes and shrinking process. This system, known as Missed scan detection will use computer vision to take control of the scanning areas of each store. The system will make sure that all the items that are being taken away are scanned. This not only targets self-checked out goods but also traditionally checked out goods.

The system will report the faults in the scanning if anything goes wrong and an attendant will get to the rescue immediately. This process not just rectifies the problem, but also minimizes it to the least. AI monitors in Walmart have already hit over 1000 stores in the states.

“Walmart always takes the security and safety of the stores seriously. We want our customers to have a pleasant shopping experience so have invested over half a billion dollars to prevent, reduce and detect crime in our stores and parking lots,” said LeMia Jenkins, a Walmart spokesperson in a statement.

“We are continuously investing in customers and workers, programs and technology to keep our stores and communities safe,” she added. She also said that this system has brought down a lot of theft and a lot of improvement has been seen in the stores thereafter.
