While Amazon assures that the majority of reviews passes its stringent authenticity standards and promptly published, the company is committed to combating review abuse. If Amazon’s smart computer thinks a review is fake, they quickly do things like delete the review, stop the person from leaving more reviews and even take legal action if needed.

Amazon’s computer uses special information to check lots of things and figure out if a review is real or fake. If there is lingering suspicion requiring further evidence, trained investigators at Amazon step in to analyze additional signals before taking corrective measures.

Amazon explains that they use a special kind of technology called “deep graph neural networks” to look at how things are connected and how people behave online. Josh Meek, senior data science manager on Amazon’s Fraud Abuse and Prevention team, emphasizes the difficulty outsiders may have in distinguishing between authentic and fake reviews.

Simultaneously, Amazon has announced a significant restructuring in the unit responsible for its widely used voice assistant, Alexa. The company is letting go of a lot of people in one part of their company. They are doing this because they want to focus more on a special kind of smart technology called generative artificial intelligence (AI). Alexa, renowned for its multifunctionality including setting timers, answering queries, playing music and serving as a home automation hub, has seen a downsizing of several hundred employees.
