As Ford’s manufacturing unit in Chennai wrapped up operations, its tech arm, Ford Business Solutions (FBS), is stepping into the spotlight. The company has plans to hire 3,000 more employees over the period of next few years. Gradually, the FBS is gearing up to become a key player in Ford’s global tech strategy. It is more in the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) segments.

Led by Mike Amend, Chief Enterprise Tech Officer at Ford Motor Company, FBS is getting deep into electric vehicle (EV) technology segment and the primary focus is to develop high-tech manufacturing lines for EVs using virtual reality (VR) as well as augmented reality (AR).

In Chennai, skilled tech experts are designing floor plans and simulating assembly lines, shaping the future of Ford’s electric vehicle platforms in the city.

But it is not just about EVs in the Chennai infrastructure. The talent pool is driving innovations across the board, from customer relations to data analytics. The city has already seen around $250 million in investments from Ford over the past five years and the momentum is only picking up.

Chennai stand out in the country in the segment. The city has expertise in developing software for EVs like software that prevents vehicle theft, manages charging and even monitors vehicle health. All these are crafted in Chennai. And Ford is not stopping just here. The company is doubling down on the city’s capabilities and aims to expand its role even further.
