Coimbatore is embracing AI technology to bolster its surveillance efforts. The city police recently implemented AI-based facial recognition CCTV systems and metadata cameras to identify and track suspects more effectively.
A senior officer from the city police said that AI-based facial recognition camera is making its debut in Tamil Nadu and starting with Coimbatore. The existing systems can capture videos and photos of suspected criminals, but manual analysis is required. With the new AI system, automatic alerts will be triggered as soon as a suspect is recognized.
The innovative AI system is designed to match captured images with the comprehensive database of criminals maintained by the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS). Once an image is captured, the AI system swiftly identifies potential matches within the criminal database and promptly relays this information to the control room.
What distinguishes this AI system is its ability to conduct more thorough investigations into a suspect’s history. Law enforcement personnel can utilize the software to verify if there are any active warrants associated with these individuals, contributing to their mission of upholding public safety.
In a remarkable development, sources within the Coimbatore police department disclosed that these AI cameras could also be instrumental in helping locate missing children, providing a ray of hope for anxious families during such trying times.
The city has allocated a budget of Rs 60 lakh for the CCTV modernization project and the funds were generated through the auctioning of old police vehicles. This innovative funding approach ensures that the city can harness the power of AI technology to enhance security without straining its financial resources.
