Artificial intelligence (AI) is gradually becoming a concern among engineers. A study by Great Learning reveals that 67.5% of them feel their jobs are being impacted negatively by it and 87.5% of them believe it is the time for upskilling.
The ability of AI is growing. Hence, the necessity for upskilling has also become more important than ever.
The Great Learning Upskilling Trends Report 2024-25 reveals 87.5% of engineers believe that acquiring new skills is important for their careers and 89% of them are planning to focus on new skills with AI and machine learning (ML). An impressive 86% have expressed a desire to upskill in Generative AI.
Dr. Dinesh Seth, Dean of the School of Engineering & Technology at MIT World Peace University, Pune, highlighted the impact of AI on engineering roles.
Engineers specializing in AI-related skills such as ML and data analytics are believed to remain in demand. Dr. Seth said that the need for engineers is to focus on supervising AI outputs, integrating AI with existing systems and managing AI-driven processes.
Dr. Mangesh V Bedekar, Dean of the School of Computer Engineering & Technology, said that roles requiring advanced skills and human judgment will become more valuable. Engineers lacking expertise in AI and data analytics are at a disadvantage with respect to their career.
Hari Krishnan Nair, Co-founder of Great Learning, highlighted the gap between the graduate skills of engineers and industry demands. The 2023 India Skills Report indicates that only 46% of engineering graduates are considered employable due to this misalignment.
Engineers embracing lifelong learning and acquiring skills will be better positioned in the evolving job landscape.
