In response to heightened criticism, Google has initiated steps to reinstate apps of several Indian digital companies that were previously removed from its Play Store platform. Sources have confirmed that Google will be restoring applications including that of Shaadi.com, 99acres, Naukri Gulf and Info Edge’s Naukri among others following public outcry.
The confirmation came from Sanjeev Bikchandani, the co-founder of Info Edge, who officially announced the reinstatement via X (formerly known as Twitter). He praised the Info Edge team, especially Hitesh Oberoi, for their hard work in fixing the issue. Bikchandani pointed out their non-stop work and praised how well they managed the crisis.
Prior to this announcement, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) had vocally criticized Google’s removal of apps of Indian companies and urged the tech giant to promptly reinstate them on the Play Store. Google’s decision to delist over a dozen apps from major Indian digital companies including that of Matrimony and Shaadi.com had sparked widespread concern within the Indian tech community.
Google’s move comes after it said it would crack down on 10 developers who didn’t follow its payment rules, even though they followed rules from other app stores. Among the delisted apps were those from prominent Indian companies like Altt, Stage and Aha streaming platforms, as well as Truly Madly, Quack Quack dating apps, Kuku FM audio content platform and FRND social networking app.
Google is responding to the demand for fair rules in app stores, especially for Indian digital companies. Bringing back these apps is a positive move to solve the issue and treat all developers fairly online.
