The mobile game industry exploded in popularity over the past few years, with game developers releasing titles optimized for handheld devices. If you commute to work on public transportation or haven’t invested in a gaming console or PC, chances are you spend a lot of time playing games on your smartphone or tablet. While there are many gaming phones on the market to enhance your gaming experience, you may not want to fork over the extra cash to buy one. If you’d like to keep playing your favorite games on your current mobile device, there are several things you can do to ensure you’re getting the best experience possible. In this article, we explain how to optimize your phone for gaming.

Free Up Space

Getting rid of junk files is one of the easiest ways to improve your phone’s performance. Whether you’re playing the different games available at an online casino or a massively multiplayer online game, freeing up space on your phone will enhance your gaming experience. Excess files on your phone lead to slow performance, interrupting gameplay. It’s a good idea to periodically take an inventory of the apps, media files, and unused documents on your phone and uninstall or delete those you aren’t using anymore. If you have an Android phone, go to settings and tap storage. Next, tap on the “free up space” button. You can select the items you don’t use anymore to delete them from your phone.

Keep Your Phone Updated

If you’re not ready to invest in a gaming phone, you’ll probably have to make do with the RAM and processor speed of your current phone. That’s not the end of the world; there are still many things you can do to enhance your phone’s performance. Updating your phone is probably one of the easiest. Android and iOS regularly release updates, including security patches and error fixes. These updates go a long way toward improving your phone’s stability and performance. When you get a notification that an update is available, install it as soon as possible.

Attach a Controller

Your phone’s touch screen works well for casual gaming; however, if you plan to play first-person shooters, battle royale, or massively multiplayer online games, you may want to consider purchasing a controller to attach to your phone. Controllers give you a higher degree of control when playing games, enhancing your mobile gaming experience. Controllers that connect directly to the sides of your iPhone or Android phone are widely available, allowing you to use your phone like a portable gaming system. These controllers offer the closest thing to a console experience you can get on a mobile device.

Adjust Your Screen’s Refresh Rate

Depending on the phone you own, you may be able to adjust your screen’s refresh rate. Most high-end phones have this option, but it’s quickly becoming standard across Android devices. If you enable a high refresh rate, the screen will update images faster, resulting in smoother on-screen motion. Although some games won’t improve with a higher refresh rate, enabling this setting will allow you to make the most of the games that do. You can find this setting on an Android phone by opening settings and going to “refresh rate” or “motion smoothness.”

Turn Off Background Services

Any apps running in the background on your phone will slow its performance. So, if you have WhatsApp, Gmail, or Facebook running in the background, your processor is always busy. These apps use up RAM space and deplete your battery, reducing the speed of your mobile device. Android allows you to manually disable these services, or you can choose to disable them for some apps.
