A Reddit post by an Indian techie has lately brought attention to the harsh realities of toxic workplaces in startups. The post was anonymous and described a disturbing incident. It revealed that co-founders of a company verbally abused an employee during a Google Meet session. The techie was thereafter reduced to tears and shared lack of support and constant mistreatment.

Startups are often romanticized as dynamic spaces with limitless potential. However, many employees face long hours, inadequate training and unprofessional behavior from leaders. The Redditor revealed that employees at the startup regularly worked 12-15 hours and without proper guidance.

Comments ranged from emotional encouragement to practical advice such as leaving the toxic workplace for better opportunities. One user said that one should start planning for exit the day a manager disrespects as no job is worth self-respect.

The incident has raised a question and it is that why some startup leaders fail to prioritize employee well-being. A toxic work culture does not just harm individuals, but it undermines the very foundation of a company. Employees who feel undervalued and disrespected are less motivated and less likely to stay.

Startups often operate with limited resources and high pressure, but that is no excuse for mistreatment. Leaders must set the tone by strengthening respect, providing clear guidance and addressing concerns with empathy. Employees are not machines, but they are people with emotions, ambitions and limits.

Change begins when leaders prioritize people over profits and employees refuse to accept anything less than basic respect. Startups are supposed to build the future, but how can they do that if they are stuck in outdated.

Every worker deserves a healthy as well as supportive workplace.
