IoT in farming: the third green revolution 1

Agriculture has always seen developments. From using plows to axes and now to tractors, farming kept evolving. And one of the revolutionary changes that could happen to agriculture today is “smart farming” with the usage of Internet of Things (IoT).

The smart farming, which is likely to become the Third Green Revolution is the most efficient and resourceful that the cultivating history has ever seen.

In the IoT based smart farming, farmers are privileged to bring out the best crops with the limited resources that are available to them. A system of sensors is built in the irrigation area which monitors and sends in data on the status of crops. The farmer is provided with a mobile application through which he gets the inputs from the sensors.

Advantages of smart farming:

Crop Monitoring: The smart sensors collect information on the soil humidity, moisture and moist. These sensors, which are called the crop monitoring devices are placed in the middle of the fields. These devices help in knowing the position of the crops, the changes that are needed to be made in the usage of pesticides of the crops.

Thus, these devices help the farmers monitor the crops with less effort and more efficiency.

Watering: The smart sprinklers are set to water the plants when the soil is shown to be dried up beyond the limit. This not just helps the farmer know when to water the crops but this is also helpful in reduction of wastage of water.

Cattle monitoring: The IoT devices are also useful to monitor the cattle: their health, nutrition and diet. This system, which is specially used by large farm owners helps in notifying when an animal is sick or diseased. These sensors also track the location of the herd and monitor their milking process too.

Greenhouse automation: With the help of IoT, greehouses can be constructed that are homes for crops that need a particular weather condition that isn’t available to yield the crops. The systems help in monitoring the crops and controls the climate inside the house. The IoT based systems help reduce human effort and delivers efficient crop yield.

Budget friendly: The Smart system is very affordable as the farmer uses his resources productively and he doesn’t have to get his soil tested as his sensors always keep him updated. The sensors also help in minimising the purchase of unnecessary pesticides and medicines required for his crops.
