Startup Empowers Women Returners with Flexible Job Opportunities

Housewives usually face job continuation challenging. Sometimes they are even underemployed to keep a balance between family and profession. Chennai-based entrepreneur Sankari Sudhar has come up with solutions to help such talented women. It has launched a startup called ‘Overqualified Housewives’ and it is basically aimed to support such women are looking ahead to reenter the workforce after career breaks due to family responsibilities. As of now, the ambitious startup has assisted more than 600 Indian women in securing flexible job opportunities.

It is an appreciated move and amid the recent ruling of India’s apex court related to the importance of childcare leave for women employees. The court said denying such leave could force them to quit the jobs. This will result with constitutional imperative of gender inclusivity in the workforce.

Data reveals that a significant number of Indian women are facing such challenges. They are finding tough to balancing work and family life. Many are leaving their jobs post-maternity to prioritize taking care for their children.

Sankari Sudhar is a computer science graduate and she herself experienced such challenges after becoming a mother. The situation led her to establish ‘Overqualified Housewives’ and address the gap in flexible job opportunities for women.

Her startup is focusing on connecting skilled women with companies which are offering diverse roles ranging from administration and content writing to digital marketing and project management. It is simultaneously also focusing on upskilling women through regular programs led by industry experts.

Her efforts are being noticed by employers and more than 700 companies have signed up to recruit from her platform. However, ‘Overqualified Housewives’ is facing challenges like negotiating fair wages and combating stereotypes.
