STMicroelectronics has introduced an advanced Internet of Things (IoT) solution featuring a new LoRaWAN System-in-Package (SiP) module. The STM32WL5MOC SiP, built with the dual-core STM32WL55JC wireless system-on-chip (SoC), offers a cost-effective and time-saving solution for remote metering, monitoring and smart-sensing devices. This small module, packaged in LGA92 10mm x 10mm, combines various essential components, including frequency-controlled oscillators, balun, filter, matching network, receive/transmit switch and associated passives. This integration streamlines RF design, saving space and simplifying circuit-layout challenges, ultimately reducing time and costs typically associated with complex RF designs.
The STM32WL5MOC SiP enables long-range, low-power data communication, ensuring a system-battery lifetime exceeding 10 years. Operating in the 864MHz to 928MHz band, it supports license-free use globally and is pre-certified for connection to LoRaWAN and Sigfox networks. The module’s open wireless subsystem accommodates multiple modulation schemes, including LoRa, (G)FSK, (G)MSK, BPSK, and compatibility with various protocols such as wM-Bus, Wi-Sun, Mioty, among others. The RF output power is selectable up to 22dBm for the US and Asian territories or 15dBm as per European regulations.
Utilizing the STM32WL55 SoC’s dual-core architecture with 256KB Flash and 64KB RAM, the module ensures real-time performance for user applications. The SoC incorporates advanced security features, including memory protection, Arm Cortex-M4 core with DSP extensions, and Cortex-M0+ for secure services such as key management and secure firmware install. An option with the STSAFE-A110 onboard enhances end-to-end data and networking security.
The STM32WL5MOC seamlessly integrates into the STM32 development ecosystem, supported by the STM32CubeMX tool for project initialization and software development. For evaluation and software integration, the B-WL5M-SUBG1 wireless prototyping board, equipped with the STM32WL5MOC module, is readily available.
