Asea Brown Boveri (ABB), the Zurich-based technology major, will set up manufacturing plants to produce electric vehicle (EV) chargers in India. The company has scheduled to complete the process by the end of this year.
Frank Muehlon, head of the Swiss engineering company’s Global Business for EV charging infrastructure, believes that manufacturing the chargers locally will aid in catering to India’s huge EV market of 1.2 billion population. ABB is eyeing to enter the Indian market of electric vehicles that has been witnessing a surge in promotion, plans and policies.
The ABB head spoke about the importance of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in e-mobility. He said that e-mobility was dependent on the OEMs’ speed of delivering the cars. He added that grid enforcement was another important aspect but was sceptical about working on its correct execution.
Without disclosing the investment amount, Muehlon said that ABB had investment plans for the facilities in India and that it would kickstart properly once all the EV plans and policies were implemented in the country. In an interaction with ET, the ABB head expressed his will to grab the electric vehicles market potential in India.
ABB deals in the areas of robotics, power, heavy electrical equipment and automation technologies. It has added charging solutions for EVs in its portfolio with its launch of affordable solutions in India with high quality, cost-effective electric car charging point for private and business use. It also offers smart building solutions from lighting to heating, music, security and car charging.
