The world of artificial intelligence (AI) is evolving rapidly. Many companies are seeking ways to enhance their AI capabilities. VMware has emerged with a significant step in this direction. It has announced a new model store for its VMware Private AI Foundation with Nvidia add-on at the annual VMware Explore conference.

The AI landscape has witnessed some dramatic changes in the past few years and the near collapse of OpenAI last fall highlights the risks of over-relying on a single AI vendor. It is a wake-up call for many enterprises and a message to diversify AI strategies as well as seek alternatives for more flexibility and more security. The rise of open-source models and increase in regulatory as well as security concerns has fueled the demand for AI solutions further for enterprise control in the private cloud segment or in-premises.

VMware is currently under the ownership of Broadcom and the company has positioned itself as a key player in the evolving market. It is offering a platform that does not lock customers into a single AI vendor or cloud provider.

The addition of a new model store is being seen as a good enhancement to the VMware Private AI Foundation. Paul Turner, vice president of products in the VMware Cloud Foundation division at Broadcom, said that the model store manager allows enterprises to offer a curated selection of AI models to their developers. The feature ensures that companies can manage their AI models more effectively and simultaneously avoid using general-purpose large language models from unknown sources on the internet. Enterprises can now confidently innovate with generative AI while maintaining strict control over the models being used with the model store.
