The rise of India as a global startup powerhouse is a present reality. An IIT Mandi report reveals India has joined the ranks of the top three startup destinations in the world. The first two destinations are the US and China. The entrepreneurial spirit in India is growing rapidly and also thriving. Cities like Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai are leading the charge.

The report reveals 14% of Indian students plan to become founders shortly after graduation and this mirrors global trends. It signals a cultural shift where innovation and self-reliance are increasingly becoming the norms rather than exceptions.

The GUESSS (Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students’ Survey) India report highlights the potential for this startup wave. More than 140,000 startups have been registered under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). The findings were based on responses from nearly 14,000 students across India and this means that 32.5% of Indian students are nascent entrepreneurs. The global average is 25.7%.

Nearly half of the students have taken entrepreneurship courses and this has far surpassed the global average. The report also brings attention to a critical challenge that only 4.8% of student-led ventures have reached the revenue-generating stage. This gap signals the need for better support systems, mentorship and funding access. India’s youth are eager to innovate and the road from ideation to sustainable business models is still fraught with hurdles.

The advantage of having the world’s largest youth population cannot be understated. India is standing at the precipice of an entrepreneurial surge. The key to unlocking this potential lies in policies that encourage innovation and also provide necessary infrastructure for startups to thrive. India’s ranking as a top startup destination is commendable, but the true test lies in sustaining this momentum.
