How 'rSIM' Could Revolutionize Mobile and IoT

Mobile technology seems ever-evolving and at a rapid speed too. Lately, we have come across a term called ‘rSIM’. It is Resilient SIM and marks a significant breakthrough in the industry. It was unveiled at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC) event. Telecom companies stated while unveiling that it will revolutionize how we stay connected and especially in the world of Internet of Things (IoT).

Until now, we have been accustomed to swapping SIM cards and especially when traveling internationally. First eSIM was introduced a couple of years ago. Now rSIM is trying to replace it. This means the landscape of mobile technology is fast changing. rSIM takes the concept of dual SIMs. It integrates two independent mobile communication profiles into a single SIM card. This means that if one network fails, the device can switch over to another network seamless. Hence, the connectivity will be uninterrupted.

The implications of rSIM are vast. Its best use will be on IoT devices and especially which are operating in remote areas. The devices often rely on stable network connections for crucial functions. The technology will be a blessing in sectors like Telecare and Critical National Infrastructure (CNI).

Deutsche Telekom and Tele2 of Sweden are among the early adopters. They have connected rSIM with IoT applications. The debut of rSIM is said to be at the best time as the IoT connections is expected to skyrocket in the coming years. It is projected that the growth could be from two billion to seven billion connections in another decade. Hence, the need for resilient technologies like rSIM becomes increasingly essential.

Apart from IoT, rSIM simultaneously holds promise for industries as well as national infrastructure that heavily rely on consistent connectivity.
